church public relations

Churches often have exciting events and initiatives, but it can be challenging for them to land media coverage.

Why? A number of factors. There might not be enough volunteers. The volunteers might not know how to reach out to the media. (I suggest my public relations book for insight.) The event or initiative might not appeal to a broad enough audience for newspaper, radio or TV coverage.

Here are some tips on how to land media coverage for your church’s event or initiative.

  1. Plan ahead. If it’s an event you’re promoting, keep in mind that many newspapers have a least a three week lead time to be included in event calendars. Whether you’re pitching a daily or weekly newspaper, it’s crucial to meet their deadlines.
  2. Get into the mind of the media consumer. Why would a TV viewer be interested in the story? Why would someone reading a news website click on your news? Thinking this through will help in your media outreach.
  3. Target a specific media contact. Determine who would be the most relevant reporter at each media outlet. Reporters don’t like having pitches blasted to everyone in their newsroom.
  4. Use a news release or media advisory. Providing written materials can aid reporters in completing their stories. Media advisories, in particular, are used to promote events.

Your church likely has committed attenders. Beyond media outreach, remember to use your church’s own social media channels and website to promote the news as well. And encourage your church’s congregation to share the news, too!
